Here I am navigating the scenic Dry Creek Road (this is right across the street from our West Sedona home!) Watch for local wildlife, such as mule deer and chirping sparrows, soaring overhead. Schnebly Hill Road: The Ultimate Adventure For those seeking a rugged experience, Schnebly Hill Road offers thrilling views and the excitement of off-road travel. This dirt road threads through Coconino National Forest, revealing breathtaking vistas of red rocks and expansive landscapes at higher elevations. While this route can be challenging and is recommended for high-clearance vehicles, it is well worth the drive. If you don't have a 4X4, don't worry, check out one of many Jeep tours that can take you right to all the beautiful vistas. Historic Old Town Cottonwood has undergone a transformation in recent years, with many new restaurants, tasting rooms, and shops to discover. This vibrant area offers a variety of experiences, from dining options to unique souvenirs, and even a scenic walk along the Verde River on the Jail Trail . Restaurants: Colt BBQ , covered in our lunch blog , this is one of our all-time favorite spots in Cottonwood. You can find BBQ slow roasted to perfection right on their patio. Belfry Brewery , located in a historic church that has been a gathering place for citizens of the Verde Valley since 1920. They often feature live music to go with their wood-fired cuisine and multiple beers on tap. Merkin Vineyards Trattoria is the newest addition to Old Town and is a vision of local rockstar Maynard James Keenan. Perched at the top of a hill behind Main Street, they feature an epic view of the Verde Valley, farm to table cuisine, and local Arizona wines. Nic's Italian Steak and Crab House is a classic and is a favorite of locals and tourists alike. They are known for their steak, fresh seafood, and Italian dishes cooked to perfection. Pizzeria Bocce and Strada @ Bocce are two separate restaurants in the same building and under the same ownership but two distinct vibes and offerings. Pizzeria Bocce features wood-fired pizza in a full-service environment. Strada has a food truck feel and offers a few of Pizzeria's favorites as well as some Italian street food that is absolutely amazing! Tavern Grille is a fun, friendly, neighborhood restaurant that has an extensive menu, outdoor seating and live music. Crema is a craft kitchen and breakfast bar specializing in brunch in an open patio between two historic buildings in Old Town. In addition to full service dining, they also offer walk up pastries and coffee to go. Another amazing spot for breakfast or lunch is Old Town Red Rooster Cafe . A family favorite of ours, they feature local ingredients and great service in a welcoming environment. At then end of Main St, but not to be forgotten is Thai Palace , serving up delicious Thai food from appetizers to classic dishes and desserts. Bing's Burger Station , a classic diner with fresh, never frozen burgers, milkshakes, and Route 66 vibes! Tasting Rooms: Located along the Verde Valley Wine Trail, Old Town Cottonwood has 11 different stops to taste various local wine. See complete list of tasting rooms HERE . Shopping: In addition to great restaurants and tasting rooms, Old Town is also home to many cute shops where you can find everything from antiques, to copper gifts, Christmas ornaments, souvenirs, fine art, and even glitter! After exploring lunch and dinner options, it's time to discover some fantastic breakfast spots. Sedona provides a range of choices from healthy selections to classic greasy spoons and everything in between. First on our list is a beloved local spot, frequently voted the best diner in town. Cafe Jose serves classic comfort food with both American and Mexican dishes. Having been open since 2004, they have spent 20 years honing their skills and earning accolades. Offering breakfast all day in addition to other menu choices, this is one of our family's favorite places to visit. Next on our breakfast journey is Sedonuts which is right next door to Cafe Jose. If you're more in the mood for grab and go, this is your spot. They feature an epic cinnamon roll dubbed "the Vortex" but make sure to go early to snag yours, it is not uncommon for them to sell out, especially during the busy season. Bonus, they just opened a new location in Cottonwood! Mesa Grill is another top spot for breakfast and offers not only a lovely brunch menu, but also fantastic views from atop the airport mesa. Situated right on the Sedona airport runway, you can sip your mimosa and watch the planes take off and land. I highly recommend making a reservation, which is super easy on OpenTable or through their website. Next on our list is another quick serve option that is great for grabbing breakfast to take on your adventures. Local Juicery is right across the street from our West Sedona home and offers dine in or take out options along with several different freshly made juices. We often stop in for their avocado toast or waffles topped with bananas and berries. They even have grab and go salads so you can get breakfast and lunch! As you travel up 89A toward Flagstaff from Sedona you'll encounter the next restaurant on our list. Indian Gardens Cafe looks like it came straight out of a fairytale and offers great breakfast and lunch options, including vegetarian and gluten free options. This is a perfect spot to stop on your way to or from West Fork Trail . Oh and did I mention, they have pie! Last on our list is one of our absolute favorite restaurants in the area. Although not located in Sedona you can find The Clinkscale in the nearby mining town of Jerome. We frequently dine here and have always been impressed by the service, quality, and overall ambience. This is another spot I highly recommend making a reservation, the restaurant is small and intimate which makes for a great dining experience. Bonus restaurant: if all else fails, there is always McDonald's! But don't expect to see golden arches anytime soon, due to city ordinances the arches are turquoise and have become a popular spot to stop and snap a pic! You'll often see a line of people waiting to get a picture with the famous turquoise arches, this is the only McDonald's in the world that has non-golden arches. (and yes they serve breakfast!) Let's begin at a lovely and relaxed location to watch the sunset, the Redwall Lounge ! Situated in West Sedona, this spot boasts a wonderful patio offering views of the red rocks and serving delightful cocktails. Below is a picture of Sean and I celebrating New Year's Eve and Sean's birthday there last year. It's always a great experience and amazing views! Another easy spot to catch a sunset is the Airport Mesa overlook . Also located in West Sedona, this viewing area located at the top of the Airport Mesa boasts a large parking area (go past the smaller parking area to the top of the hill to a large lot, $3 to park). Added bonus: Mesa Grill is also right there, grab dinner and a sunset! For a peaceful, spiritual experience make your way to the Amitabha Stupa and Peace Park . This traditional Buddhist destination for mindfulness, prayer, and meditation is open to everyone and offers a serene environment to catch a sunrise or sunset. Next on our list is Bell Rock , another destination that is easily accessible via a short trail and the red rocks simply glow during the sunset hour. While parking might be a challenge, it is worth the wait (or take the Sedona Shuttle !). Sunrise here is simply amazing and is often not as busy as other times of day. We hike this often, but recently went out for sunrise and it was such a difference and exhilarating experience. In the same area as Devil's Bridge is Doe Mountain , which offers another stunning red rock view during sunrise or sunset. Although this trail is short, it involves a little bit of scrambling to get to the views. Once you get up to the top you are rewarded with amazing vistas in all directions and going back is downhill! Last on our list is Schnebly Hill , getting to the vista viewing area requires a long hike, Jeep Tour, high clearance 4x4 vehicle, or an ATV but the view from the top is epic. We generally do this trail with our Jeep Wrangler and it is a pretty simple trail if you've driven off-road before, just be prepared to be bumped around. If you left your rig at home, you can find a Jeep tour to be your guide or rent an ATV and explore the area on your own.
