One of the things we love most about Northern Arizona is that some of the best adventures happen away from the crowds. Recently, we teamed up with our friends at Arabella Off Road for a day exploring the historic Copper Chief Trail between Cottonwood and Jerome. What started as a scenic drive turned into one of our favorite local adventures—combining rugged backroads, incredible views, Arizona history, and lunch overlooking the Verde Valley. If you're looking for a unique day trip during your stay in Sedona or Cottonwood, here's exactly how we spent the day. Starting in Cottonwood We picked up our vehicle through Arabella Off Road, a local company that rents Jeeps and Ford Broncos designed for exploring Arizona's backcountry. While many visitors stick to paved roads, having a capable off-road vehicle opens up an entirely different side of the Verde Valley. The terrain changes quickly, the crowds disappear, and the views become even better. After a quick orientation, we headed toward the Copper Chief Trail. One of Arabella Off Road's iconic Broncos! The Copper Chief Trail The Copper Chief Trail, also known as FRS 493 is a scenic off-road route that climbs from the Verde Valley toward Jerome, Arizona's famous mining town perched high on Cleopatra Hill. The trail winds through high desert terrain with dramatic views of the surrounding mountains and valley below. Along the way you'll see evidence of Arizona's mining history, rugged landscapes, and some of the most beautiful vistas in the region. Here we are right at the start of the trail, heading up the hill to Jerome! One of our favorite parts of the drive was how quickly the scenery changed. Within a relatively short distance, we went from desert vegetation and rolling hills to elevated viewpoints and forests overlooking miles of Arizona landscape. As the elevation changed, so did our view! The trail is adventurous enough to feel exciting but still accessible for visitors looking to experience off-roading without tackling extreme terrain. You can see all the way to Flagstaff from up here! Arriving in Jerome Eventually, the trail brought us onto 89a just north of Jerome, one of Arizona's most unique small towns. Once known as the "Wickedest Town in the West," Jerome began as a booming copper mining community in the late 1800s. Today, it's filled with art galleries, historic buildings, local shops, and incredible views overlooking the Verde Valley. Walking through Jerome feels a little like stepping back in time. Historic brick buildings cling to the mountainside, winding streets reveal new viewpoints around every corner, and the town's mining history is impossible to miss. Streets of Jerome, AZ Lunch at The Asylum After exploring town, we stopped for lunch at The Asylum Restaurant inside the historic Jerome Grand Hotel. The Jerome Grand Hotel itself has a fascinating history. Originally built as the United Verde Hospital in the 1920s, the building was later transformed into one of Arizona's most recognizable historic hotels. The restaurant offers panoramic views of the Verde Valley, making it one of the most scenic lunch spots in the area. Between the history, atmosphere, and scenery, it was the perfect midway point for the trip. The Drive Back to Sedona After lunch, we made our way back toward Sedona, enjoying more spectacular views along the route. One of the things we appreciated most about the day was how much variety we experienced in just a few hours—off-road trails, mountain views, historic landmarks, local dining, and some of Arizona's most beautiful scenery. It's the kind of adventure that reminds you why Northern Arizona is such a special place. Located in the heart of Sedona, Cuptown is reliable, friendly, and easy to get to. The coffee is solid, the service is quick, and it’s a convenient stop no matter where you’re headed. Great if you’re out exploring and need a dependable mid-morning pick-me-up. 6. Local Juicery (Coffee + Healthy Options) Best for: Lighter, health-focused options If you’re looking for something a little different, Local Juicery offers great coffee alongside smoothies, juices, and lighter fare. It’s a good balance if you want something refreshing but still need your caffeine fix. Their avocado toast is some of the best I've had and you can walk there from our Sedona home! 7. Evening Stargazing Sedona and the surrounding area is known for its dark skies and clear nights, making it a prime spot for stargazing. On particularly dark evenings you can even see the Milky Way. Our patios and large viewing deck in the middle of our property make for extraordinary stargazing. After a day exploring, come back, relax, and unwind under the starry skies. While Sedona is famous for its fantastic hiking opportunities, there are plenty of other activities available to experience the outdoors that do not necessitate wearing hiking shoes! First on our list is a Jeep tour, ditch the hiking poles and let an experienced driver lead you into red rock bliss. There are many local companies that offer tours, the most famous being the Pink Jeep Tours and Sedona Jeep tours (which also offers hummer tours!). You can choose from bumpy and action packed to smooth and scenic. If an ATV is more your speed, there are guided ATV tours or numerous companies that offer ATV rentals where you can chart your own course. Arizona ATV Adventures offers scenic guided tours. Sedona ATV is a great place to check out ATV rental for self-guided adventures. They'll set you up with safety equipment and a map to some of the most popular trails. One of my all time favorite non-hiking activities to recommend is a ride with Red Rock Balloons . Although the rides start at sunrise, they are worth the early wake up. Seeing the sunrise over the red rocks from a hot air balloon is simply magical! We often see them floating over our West Sedona home and even see them floating down the Page Springs valley right in front of our Cornville homes . Trains are also a fantastic way to experience Sedona and the surrounding area. Verde Canyon Railroad , a short drive from Sedona offers canyon views and they even do special events such as Ales on Rails and the Grape Train escape where you can sample Arizona craft beer and local wine. A little further away in Williams is the Grand Canyon Railway which can take you right to the edge of the Grand Canyon. We love taking family and friends on the railway and we always have an amazing time. Once you arrive at the Grand Canyon it's a short walk to the canyon edge where you can experience all the splendor without all the hiking! During the summer months check out Verde Adventures , they offer kayaking and tubing down the Verde river. Lazily float along enjoying the scenery and then end at Alcantara Vineyards where you can grab a bite or taste some Arizona wine. Tour includes parking at the vineyard, shuttle to river entrance, kayak or tube, and a credit toward food or wine when your float is complete. I did this last summer with my friends and it was a great time! E-bikes have also made it to Sedona, avoid all the traffic and explore with an E-bike! You can rent one at E-bike rental Sedona . Their friendly staff will set you up with a bike and a quick lesson to get you moving through Sedona with ease. They even have bikes equipped with tires to take you through snow! Last but definitely not least on our list is Horsin' Around Adventures . If you stay at our Cornville tiny homes you can see them across the valley. They offer horse back riding into the national forest land around our home. Just because you're short on time doesn't mean you have to sacrifice an amazing experience in Sedona! Day 1 - Arrive in afternoon/evening The easiest way to get to Sedona is to fly into Phoenix, rent a car, and drive I-17 north into the Verde Valley. In general it takes about 2 hours to drive this route. Along the way you'll see beautiful Saguaro Cactus and have a chance to stop for a piece of world famous Rock Springs pie! Check out Rock Springs here: https://rockspringscafe.com/ Once you're in Verde Valley, make your way to one of our homes, we have everything from a glamping Airstream to a creekside log cabin. Here's our Sedona home, located in the heart of West Sedona this home is available as a 1 or 2 bedroom option and can sleep up to 5. It features a hot tub, fire pit, basketball hoop, and fully stocked kitchen. There are also several hiking trails accessible right from our neighborhood! Day 2 - Explore Sedona! Morning - Grab a quick bite to eat at Sedonuts or Cafe Jose . They are both family owned, locally operated, and a favorite among locals and visitors! Then head to Sedona Airport Loop Trail for a beautiful hike around the airport mesa giving you a 360 degree view of Sedona. Park at Sunset Park and take the sunset trail right up to the airport loop trail, this way you avoid the limited parking at the trailhead. Alternatively park at the pay lot at the top of the airport mesa. If you park at sunset, once you connect to airport loop go right (so you go counter-clockwise around the mesa). This route is a little easier in terms of elevation change and also ends at the airport vortex and look out point. Lunch - After you finish hiking check out Tortas de Fuego if you're looking for authentic Mexican cuisine, it's one of our family favorites! Another amazing option is Mesa Grill , another of our family go-to's. They are frequently voted among the best restaurants in Sedona and Mesa grill boasts one of the best views in the valley. Afternoon - A short ways from the airport mesa is Tlaquepaque , an art and shopping district inspired by a traditional Mexican village. They feature local art galleries, shops, and fantastic restaurants such as Rene and Secret Garden Cafe . Evening - Start your evening off with a cocktail at Red Wall Lounge , one of our favorite spots for relaxing, listening to live music, and enjoying the red rock views! Follow it up with dinner at Forty1 , Mariposa , Rascal's Modern Diner , or Dahl & Di Luca. All are fantastic options, but almost all require a reservation especially during busier months so make sure to plan ahead so you don't miss out! Here we are at Red Wall and Mariposa! Day 3 - Sunrise Hike! Get up early on your last day and take a hike up Doe Mountain to watch the sunrise. If you want less of a scramble Fay Canyon or Secret Slick Rock trail are both easy options with breathtaking scenery. View from Doe Mountain and Fay Canyon This shot was taken at night from Secret Slick Rock trail. This amazing trail gives you awe inspiring views of Cathedral Rock, one of the most iconic rock formations in the area. The best part of this trail is it is flat and easy to access, making it a local favorite and hot spot for photographers. Lunch/Afternoon - After spending the morning hiking up an appetite it's time to find some lunch. Take the short trip over to Old Town Cottonwood and check out Colt BBQ or Belfry brewery and take a stroll through the shops, wine tasting rooms, and antique shops. For more on Cottonwood see my earlier blog post here ! Alternatively, head to Uptown Sedona and stroll the shops and restaurants. Browse for souvenirs, gems, keepsakes, antiques, or jewelry all with the red rock backdrop. If you have time you can also check out one or more of the many wineries in the surrounding area such as Page Springs Cellars , Oak Creek Vineyards , or DA Ranch . There are several tour companies that can provide a guided tour or simply go down Page Springs Rd to find many excellent wineries in a gorgeous valley 10 minutes from West Sedona. Sedona boasts numerous incredible hiking trails, and below are some of my top picks offering breathtaking views! Devil's Bridge is perhaps the best known structure in Sedona and for good reason. It is the largest natural arch in the entire valley and offers amazing views of surrounding red rocks. Most people park at Dry Creek Vista and take Dry Creek Road to Devil's Bridge Trail (3.9 miles out and back) Find directions here: https://www.alltrails.com/ar/trail/us/arizona/devils-bridge-trail Often times Dry Creek Vista parking is full, if you have trouble finding a spot you can also park at the Mescal Trailhead (off Long Canyon Rd) and take Mescal Trail to Devil's Bridge Trail. It ends up being the same distance and the views are just as amazing. See info here: https://www.alltrails.com/ar/trail/us/arizona/devil-s-bridge-via-mescal-trailhead--2 If you have 4x4 with high clearance, you can go straight onto Dry Creek Road past the Dry Creek Vista parking lot and park in the small lot right next to the trail. We can't talk about epic views without mentioning the Subway Cave off Boynton Canyon Trail. Follow the take off at about mile 2 to the right to explore the cave and other ruins. Getting in the cave is a steep climb so make sure to wear good hiking shoes. https://www.alltrails.com/ar/trail/us/arizona/boynton-canyon-trail The Birthing Cave, located near Devil's Bridge in West Sedona, is a remarkable destination worth exploring. This hike is shorter, only 1.9 miles round trip and with mostly flat terrain. While ascending into the cave involves a bit of a scramble, the stunning view from the cave's back makes it all worthwhile. Map can be found here: https://www.alltrails.com/ar/trail/us/arizona/soldier-pass-trail Along this 4.5 mile out and back trail you'll first encounter Devil's Kitchen a large sinkhole, then the Seven Sacred Pools with Coffeepot rock formation in the background and finally you'll come across Soldier's Pass Arch and Cave. Parking at this trail is extremely limited so we highly suggest you utilize the Sedona Shuttle or park at Posse Grounds park and walk through the neighborhood to the trailhead (adds about 2 miles to the hike). Alternatively a few permits are granted per day to take the 4x4 trail that parallels the hiking trail. The main road up the hill is a rocky OHV trail that is 12 miles end to end and terminates just south of Munds Park, AZ. At one time this was the main road from Sedona to Flagstaff! But don't worry, if you don't have a 4x4 vehicle there is a large parking area at the bottom of the Hill and multiple trails going up and around the area. The most iconic spot on this trail is Window Cave Lookout, you can find it here: https://maps.app.goo.gl/yPf68GP3N9Vo9fdD8 The picture to the left above was taken by Lisa Garrett a fantastic local photographer. You can often find couples eloping or taking engagement photos at this amazing location. Known as Shaman Cave or Robber's Roost, this epic view is near the end of Forest Service Road 525C. There are 2 areas to park to explore this area, the first is at the intersection of 525C and Forest Service Road 9530 and is easier to access. The second area requires high clearance and 4x4 capability. Continue on 9530 up to a larger flat parking area to access the trail to the cave about a mile closer than the first parking area. Uptown Sedona is well-known and popular, but have you heard about the equally fantastic area in nearby Cottonwood? Historic Old Town Cottonwood has undergone a transformation in recent years, with many new restaurants, tasting rooms, and shops to discover. This vibrant area offers a variety of experiences, from dining options to unique souvenirs, and even a scenic walk along the Verde River on the Jail Trail . Restaurants: Colt BBQ , covered in our lunch blog , this is one of our all-time favorite spots in Cottonwood. You can find BBQ slow roasted to perfection right on their patio. Belfry Brewery , located in a historic church that has been a gathering place for citizens of the Verde Valley since 1920. They often feature live music to go with their wood-fired cuisine and multiple beers on tap. Merkin Vineyards Trattoria is the newest addition to Old Town and is a vision of local rockstar Maynard James Keenan. Perched at the top of a hill behind Main Street, they feature an epic view of the Verde Valley, farm to table cuisine, and local Arizona wines. Nic's Italian Steak and Crab House is a classic and is a favorite of locals and tourists alike. They are known for their steak, fresh seafood, and Italian dishes cooked to perfection. Pizzeria Bocce and Strada @ Bocce are two separate restaurants in the same building and under the same ownership but two distinct vibes and offerings. Pizzeria Bocce features wood-fired pizza in a full-service environment. Strada has a food truck feel and offers a few of Pizzeria's favorites as well as some Italian street food that is absolutely amazing! Tavern Grille is a fun, friendly, neighborhood restaurant that has an extensive menu, outdoor seating and live music. Crema is a craft kitchen and breakfast bar specializing in brunch in an open patio between two historic buildings in Old Town. In addition to full service dining, they also offer walk up pastries and coffee to go. Another amazing spot for breakfast or lunch is Old Town Red Rooster Cafe . A family favorite of ours, they feature local ingredients and great service in a welcoming environment. At then end of Main St, but not to be forgotten is Thai Palace , serving up delicious Thai food from appetizers to classic dishes and desserts. Bing's Burger Station , a classic diner with fresh, never frozen burgers, milkshakes, and Route 66 vibes! Not only does Sedona have amazing hiking trails, but you can also find some epic OHV trails in Sedona and the surrounding area. We've spent the last few years exploring all these awesome areas and here are some of our favorites. Welcome to Broken Arrow Trail! This is one of the most iconic OHV trails in Sedona and while some parts are a little challenging, there are plenty of Pink Jeeps to follow and other people around to ask for help with lines and spotting. We've done this trail dozens of times now and always have a great time. As long as you can get over the first obstacle 0.2 miles in aptly called go-no-go rock, you'll be able to complete the trail. Also, make sure to take the side trail to Submarine rock, climb to the top on foot for some epic Sedona views. There is plenty of room to park and hike up to the top. Here we are at Cliffhanger trail just west of Sedona off 89A. This is a 6.5 mile out and back trail that is pretty easy until the end where there is a steep descent into a valley. At the end of the trail there is a small gate where you can continue on foot if you want to explore more. If the long descent at the end looks too challenging there is a place to turn around right at the top and you still get the amazing views. This is a less traveled trail, so unlike Broken Arrow you might not encounter too many others. We've done this trail multiple times and love exploring this area. For more of her work, visit: www.lggphoto.com To the west of Sedona, there are forest service roads leading to an impressive cave called Shaman Cave or Robbers Roost. Follow 525C north to 9530, which leads to the trailhead of the cave. If you encounter difficulties on 9530, you can park at the turn and walk the rest of the way. While 525C is a well-maintained dirt road, 9530 is more demanding, necessitating high clearance and 4-wheel drive vehicles. https://www.alltrails.com/explore/trail/us/arizona/robbers-roost-trail?mobileMap=false&ref=sidebar-static-map Finally, on our list is Devil's Bridge via Dry Creek Road. Finding parking at the trailhead can be tricky, so if you don't have a 4-wheel drive vehicle, I suggest using the Sedona Shuttle for transportation. However, if you have a capable Jeep, truck, or ATV, you're in luck as there is a small parking area further along the trail that brings you much closer to Devil's Bridge. Instead of turning left into the paved parking lot at the Dry Creek Vista Trailhead, continue straight onto the dirt road. There is a large speed bump that prevents regular cars from proceeding onto the dirt road, but if you can navigate past it, you'll be able to access the trail. After a few miles, you'll see a sign for Devil's Bridge trail on the right, where there is a small parking area available.
